ASR 33 Teletype Paper Tape Reader Video

This video demonstrates the operation of the paper tape reader mechanism of the ASR 33 Teletype. The mechanism is powered by an electromagnet which lifts the 8 sense pins up. If the sense pin goes through a hole in the paper tape the gold contact wire attached to the pin closes to make that bit a mark (1). When the pins are lowered the tape advances to the next position. The pins aren't clearly visible in the video but can be seen at the top of the metal plate in this closeup picture

The video is available in several formats. How to view videos. The video is 10 seconds.
