ASR 33 Teletype Internal Mechanism

This video demonstrates the operation of the internal mechanism of the ASR 33 Teletype viewed from the rear. The motor in the middle bottom drives the main shaft. Clutches engage when a character is received with the bits driving an electromagnet in the selector mechanism which uses the cams on the right end of the main shaft to decode the received character. The character is encoded as parallel data in the movement of the codebars below the printing unit running to the punch on the right.

The video is available in several formats. How to view videos. The video is 17 seconds.

To have realistic volume turn your speakers up to where it will start to interfere with talking to a person near you when the teletype is printing.
