THE ASSEMBLY'S RELATIONSHIP TO THE TOP MIRROR, PRODUCT, AND TRANSMISSION LIGHT COLLECTOR IS SHOWN IN FIG. 4. .SKIP REFERRING TO FIG. 3, THE SCANNER BASEPLATE (1), IS MOUNTED ON THE FRAME WITH THE LASER (3), POWER SUPPLY (4), AND SCANNER MOTOR (6), EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM THE UPPER FRAMEWORK PLATFORM. THE EIGHT-SIDED ROTATING MIRROR (8) AND PRISM (7), PROJECT THROUGH THE BASEPLATE INTO THE SCAN PATH SHROUD. AN ACCESS DOOR IN THE SHROUD IS PROVIDED OPPOSITE THE ROTATING MIRROR AND PRISM FOR PERIODIC MAINTENANCE. .SKIP .COMMENT PAGE 11 THE TOP MIRROR, WHICH FOLDS AND REDIRECTS THE SCAN PATH, IS LOCATED ABOVE THE SCANNER ASSEMBLY. IT TOO IS SERVICEABLE FROM THE UPPER FRAME PLATFORM BUT HAS A RUBBERIZED CANVAS BOOT WITH A ZIPPER FOR SERVICE ACCESS. .SKIP THE LASER AND ALL BEAM-SHAPING AND FOCUS OPTICS ARE MOUNTED ON A SKATE-BOARD TYPE OF SUBBASE WHICH IS IN TURN MOUNTED ON THE MAIN SCANNER BASEPLATE. THE PURPOSE OF THE SKATE BOARD IS TO ENABLE THE USER TO MOUNT AND PREALIGN A SPARE LASER AND SET OF BEAM OPTICS FOR RAPID MAINTENANCE IN CASE OF LASER FAILURE. THE ENTIRE SKATE BOARD PACKAGE IS COVERED BY A SHEET-METAL HOUSING WITH A 1/4 IN. NPT AIR-HOSE FITTING ON THE SIDE FOR INTRODUCTION OF PURGE AIR. THE PURGE AIR IS PRIMARILY FOR LASER COOLING BUT ALSO SERVES TO IMPART SLIGHTLY POSITIVE PRESSURE TO THIS AREA, WITH RESPECT TO THE INSPECTOR SHROUD, TO PREVENT FIBER FLY OR DUST CONTAMINATION OF THE OPTICS. A SECOND SHROUD WITH A SIMILIAR AIR FITTING IS PROVIDED AROUND THE ROTATING MIRROR. .SKIP .NOTE WARNING IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ONLY CLEAN, DRY, INSTRUMENT AIR OR LAB NITROGEN BE SUPPLIED TO THESE HOUSINGS. TO TEST FOR SUITABILITY, ALLOW THE PROPOSED AIR TO IMPINGE ON A CLAEN PIECE OF GLASS FOR ONE DAY (24 HOURS). IF ANY TRACES OF OIL OR WATER SPOTTING ARE SEEN ON THE GLASS AT THE END OF THIS PERIOD, THE SUPPLY IS NOT TO BE USED FOR THIS PURPOSE. .SKIP .END NOTE .CENTER ------- .SKIP THE SCANNER MOTOR AND EIGHT-SIDED MIRROR ARE MOUNTED AS AN INTEGRAL UNIT ON THE SCANNER BASEPLATE. A KNURLED DIFFERENTIAL SCREW-TYPE ADJUSTMENT KNOB IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE MOTOR FOR ADJUSTING THE ANGLE OF ATTACK OF THE LASER BEAM ON THE MIRROR FACETS. .SKIP THE SCANNER DRIVE (CRYSTAL - 240 HZ AC POWER SOURCE FOR THE SCANNER MOTOR) IS THE ONLY COMPONENT OF THIS SUBSYSTEM NOT LOCATED ON THE MAIN-FRAME. IT IS LOCATED IN THE AREA ELECTRICAL CONTRL ROOM AND OPERATED FROM THE MAIN ELECTRONIC CONSOLE. THE CHIEF PURPOSE OF THE SCANNER DRIVE IS TO PROVIDE HIGHLY STABLIZED 240 HZ, 3-PHASE POWER TO THE SCAN MOTOR. MARK THE LOCATION OF ONE EDGE OF THE LASER SPOT; ADVANCE THE MIRROR TO THE NEXT FACET AND REPOSITION THE SPOT ON THE TARGET. MEASURE AND RECORD THE MD DEVIATION OF THE SPOT FROM THE FIRST FACET.REPEAT THE ABOVE FOR THE REMAINING SIX FACETS OF THE MIRROR. WHEN THE SYSTEM WAS NEW THE MAXIMUM DEVIATION FROM FACET TO FACET WAS WITHIN PLUS OR MINUS 0.012 IN.
